Description

This animation is from June 12th and shows a large loop prominence. There are only 9 frames starting at 13:47 until 14:12 UT and I should have gone longer but for some reason that did not happen. Seeing was marginal but the activity was too interesting to pass up, so I'll settle for what the weather gave me.

The width of the prominence is about 70,000 miles reaching a height of approximately 40,000 miles.

For a more detailed explanation about the physics of the activity, I would like to hand that over to my dear friend Andrew Rosado, who is pursuing his PhD in Astro-Physics. He knows way more about the dynamics of what is going on and I hope you find his description interesting and educational. I know I will!

From Andrew:
This prominence is rather fascinating in that it reaches far out from the chromosphere, into corona. This is not unusual in of itself, however, what is unusual is the distinct structure and path of travel the prominence has, given its size. This cycle is known as the chromosphere-corona mass cycle, it is the exchange of mass by means of solar phenomena. In this instance that is a prominence; the ionized plasma is shunted through a formed magnetic flux tube, out from the chromosphere, into the corona and back to the chromosphere and that is distinctly visible here.

If you’re interested in a bit more about me and the telescope, feel free to watch a presentation that I gave to The Astro Imaging Channel (awesome site) on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lm5boF-5hpc&t=3370s
